Report someone littering
Residents of the Shire of Manjimup are encouraged to report anyone they see illegally dumping rubbish in the bush, reserves, roadsides or in public bins.
The illegal dumping of rubbish incurs a cost that is ultimately paid for by the whole community. The cost of cleaning up after irresponsible dumping is not free. Many items dumped such as cans and bottles can be deposited free at waste sites and much of the green waste such as lawn clippings can be turned into valuable compost.
Many "dumpers" complain that tip charges are responsible for their actions, but don't hesitate to drive kilometres into the bush incurring a greater cost than the tip fee. Other "dumpers" incorporate disposal of their rubbish in the bush with firewood collection. Illegal dumping is usually a result of ignorance and convenience, not cost.
Contrary to popular belief it is not permissible to dump green waste in the bush, it attracts the same fine as any other waste. People who dump green waste justify their actions by stating that it is organic and will either decompose or be burnt in the next fire. Dumped green waste can be responsible for the spread of plant diseases and the spread of exotic weeds and plants in the natural bush, the eradication of which can be a very expensive time consuming exercise (ie. Blackberries, Watsonia, Bridal Creeper etc).
If you see illegal dumping, please contact the Shire of Manjimup or the Department of Conservation and Land Management on 9771 7988.
