Dog owners asked to Act Responsibly

28-09-2011
Complaints regarding wandering dogs and dog attacks have increased recently prompting Shire Rangers to remind dog owners to act responsibly.

Coordinator of Ranger and Emergency Services, Todd Ridley said "If you own a dog, you have a legal responsibility to keep it under control, either within a fenced area on your property or on a leash when about in public, as being confronted by an unrestrained dog can be terrifying, particularly for children and the elderly".  Rangers will be issuing fines to owners and / or impounding dogs found wandering.

A dog attack includes a dog aggressively rushing at or attempting to attack a person or animal, as well as the tearing of clothing, biting or causing physical injury.  Penalties of up to $10,000 apply for a dog attack and / or 12 months imprisonment.

The Shire recognises the health benefits exercise provides to owners and their dogs and encourages owners to use dog exercise areas throughout the Shire where dogs can be exercised without needing to be on a lead.  Maps of all dog exercise areas can be obtained from the Shire of Manjimup Administration Centre.

"Everyone should be able to walk, exercise or play outdoors in this wonderful environment without needing to look out constantly to avoid dog droppings.  Picking up after your dog is not only the responsible thing to do but may also save you receiving a fine."  Shire Ranger Sarah Williams said.

Members of the public and dog owners should contact the Rangers Department at the Shire of Manjimup to know more about responsibilities of dog ownership.

Statement ends.
