MEDIA RELEASE – Vote on the design of a tribute to the Southern Arch
The Shire of Manjimup is inviting community members and visitors to vote on the design of the tribute to the former 'Southern Arch' which was destroyed in 2013. Voting runs from Wednesday, 1 February 2017 and runs until 4pm on Tuesday, 28 February 2017. The designs are on display in the Community Information Office for the Town Centre Revitalisation project at 5 Brockman Street in Manjimup, which is where voting is taking place.
The decision by Council to not reinstate the 'Southern Arch' has been described by Shire President Wade DeCampo as "a very difficult call to make". "Our hands have been tied due to several factors outside of our control, including major design and construction conditions imposed on any new Southern Arch which would require significant changes to be made to the existing Northern Timber Arch," explained Cr DeCampo.
"Both of the archways were community assets and we recognise their significance to the region, but compromising the still-standing Northern Arch in order to build a replica of sorts as the Southern Arch would have not been satisfactory – the decision essentially allowed us to maintain the existing Northern Arch in its original and authentic state," said Cr DeCampo.
An expression of interest was advertised by the Shire of Manjimup in November 2016, seeking submissions on the design, fabrication and construction of a Manjimup town entry statement on the South Western Highway as a tribute to the 'Southern Arch'.
"The idea is for an iconic structure to symbolise the southern arch and the opportunity to vote on this tribute is so that community members take part in that decision and feel a sense of pride and ownership of that new asset" said Cr DeCampo.
There are three designs on display which have been shortlisted from seven submissions received during the Expression of Interest process. The 'winner' will be announced following a vote count early in March 2017.
