Well Being Warren Blackwood

Well Being Warren Blackwood is a project funded by the Australian Government which aims to decrease overweight, obesity and other risk factors for chronic disease.  Adults in the Warren Blackwood region are being targeted with a number of free healthy lifestyle programs:

HEALTM – the Healthy Eating and Lifestyle program. Consists of 2 hour group sessions each week for 8 weeks: 1 hour of gentle exercise and 1 hour of lifestyle education to help people develop lifelong healthy lifestyle habits.  Sharing ideas and asking questions is encouraged.

AustCycle –Cycle training courses for adults of all skill levels.  Whether for fitness, fun or transport, AustCycle can give you the skills and confidence to get on your bike and ride more.  Two wheeler and three wheeler bicycles are available for loan.

Food Sensations – cooking and nutrition courses to teach you to make healthy meals on a budget. Chronic disease caused by poor diet is a leading cause of disability in our community.  Food Sensations not only addresses this, it is a fun way to socialise and enjoy good food.  The course outline changes each season to utilise recipes using seasonal fresh produce.

Community Gardening – Start up funding is available to get a community garden started in each of the 7 target towns: Bridgetown, Greenbushes, Manjimup, Nannup, Northcliffe, Pemberton and Walpole.

The 7 Town Wellness Challenge empowers communities to fight the growing problem of preventable lifestyle disease in their own backyard.  Towns will compete for the title of the Healthiest Town in Warren Blackwood with a prize pool of $3000 to improve fitness resources in their town.  The winning town is judged by the highest participation rate, and the largest decreases in the average weight and waist circumference.  There are also individual prizes valued at $600 each for participants who decrease their weight and waist circumference over the 12 month challenge.

As part of the 7 town challenge events, we usually provide a healthy light lunch.  If you would like some advice on catering for your next event, our Healthy Catering and Healthy Sandwich Guidelines are available for you to use.
