Caravan Parks & Camping

Legislation Act
Regulation

The Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds legislation is the principal legislation governing caravanning and camping in Western Australia. For those people considering establishing a caravan park, it is strongly suggested that you obtain a copy of the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997. Within it is a lot of pertinent information to the requirements for the setting up and maintaining of a caravan park.

In addition to caravan parks, this legislation also governs other camping issues. People found to be camping in locations where they have not sought permission of the landowner face infringements or the possibility of prosecution. For land owned or vested in the Shire of Manjimup, unless prior approval has been granted, prosecution with a penalty up to $1,000 is liable. Signs indicating as such have been or currently are being erected in problem areas.

The legislation also governs the length of camping permissible on land, which one is legally permitted to camp on. The best example of this situation would be a person residing within a caravan or tent on a vacant block that they own. The legislation states that a person may camp for no longer than three consecutive days in any 28-day period on any land they are legally entitled to camp on. The reasoning behind this is to effectively govern important public health issues such as potable water supply, liquid and solid waste disposal as well as the need to provide a minimum habitable standard.

Should you wish to camp for a longer period than three days, you will need to make written application to the Shire of Manjimup outlining your reasons. Details will be required of yourself so that Council can be satisfied that there will be no public health risk and that any requirements of the Building Code of Australia can be complied with. Please contact the Shire of Manjimup on 9771 7777 for further details.

There are nine licensed caravan parks within the Shire of Manjimup please contact the respective visitor centre websites for their locations.
