Keep recycling is the message from the Shire of Manjimup after Cleanaway's Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Guildford suffered a catastrophic fire early last week.
Cleanaway intends to rebuild the materials recovery facility but this will take some time, the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council MRF at Canning Vale is ramping up to be able to take more commingled recyclables, however it is inevitable that because of the volume of material, some commingled recyclables will still have to be sent to landfill (although Cleanaway will continue to try to address this) and it will mostly affect metropolitan local governments.
The Shire of Manjimup understands that our commingled recycling will be sent to Cleanaway's MRF in Albany (Walpole, Northcliffe, Quinninup, Pemberton this week and Manjimup and surrounds from next week).
"The Albany Materials Recovery Facility is manual sorting and will be working at capacity, so while we already do a great job of recycling in our area, now more than ever we need to focus on getting it right with clean, uncontaminated material", urges Shire President Paul Omodei, "too great a proportion of incorrect materials (contaminants) will be a really difficult burden for this facility".
We wish Cleanaway well throughout the recovery and rebuilding process, "it will be a long process and we will provide all co-operation possible throughout this period" he added.
The Shire is committed to best practice recycling and encourages residents to remember the mantra 'when in doubt leave it out' and to download the 'what can I recycle fact sheet' from our website.
