Children's Rhyme, Story Time & Early Literacy

Early literacy isn’t just about learning to read, it is about developing a love of stories, building vocabulary, strengthening attention and understanding the world. Public libraries support early literacy by creating welcoming, playful environments where children can explore language, imagination and ideas at their own pace.

These sessions are part of the SLWA (State Library of Western Australia) Better Beginnings program. To encourage families to read, talk and share stories together from an early age. They support language development and a lifelong love of books. Better Beginnings encourages parents and carers to share books and rhymes, build early communication skills and make reading a fun part of everyday life.

Our Rhyme Time and Story Time are relaxed, interactive early learning sessions for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, supporting early literacy through stories, songs, rhymes and play.

They include music, actions, group participation and simple craft activities, helping children build listening skills, confidence and early language while giving families a chance to connect.

Parents can nurture early literacy by turning everyday moments into fun, language‑rich experiences. You can support your child’s literacy skills through everyday activities, such as:

  • Talking about what you see and do together.
  • Reading and rereading favourite books.
  • Singing songs and nursery rhymes.
  • Pointing out words and pictures in books and everyday places.
  • Encouraging drawing, scribbling and storytelling.
  • Simple daily moments help build strong early literacy skills.
