Lotterywest Boosts Pemberton Community Hub - Balang Miya

The Shire of Manjimup has secured a Lotterywest grant of $323,488 to support the finalisation of the Balang Miya Pemberton Community Hub, a project that has been more than a decade in the making.

Initially conceived as a simple colocation of the Pemberton RSL, Community Resource Centre and Library, the vision for the hub expanded over time into a vibrant, multi-purpose precinct housing eight community organisations. In 2020, the Shire received an initial $1.2 million grant from Lotterywest to bring this ambitious project to life.

While the impacts of COVID-19, such as escalating building costs, trade shortages, and supply delays, required the project to be scaled back from its original scope, the hub was delivered in 2023 with a strong focus on core community priorities. Guided by extensive consultation, thoughtful planning, and a commitment to long-term community benefit, groups moved into the co-designed space during 2023-2024.

Together with a $100,000 contribution from the Shire, the latest funding will enable key finishing touches to the hub, including some minor building works, fencing, air-conditioning, solar panels, an accessibility ramp, and enhancements to the external community space. These final elements will further enhance the hub’s functionality and amenity, completing a project built on years of community vision and collaboration.

Shire President Donelle Buegge said the latest funding marks a major milestone for the project. “This funding allows us to bring the vision for Balang Miya to completion after years of dedication, collaboration, and perseverance. While the journey has had its challenges, the commitment of all involved has ensured we have a community hub that will serve generations to come. We deeply appreciate Lotterywest’s continued support in making this possible.”

In addition to the grant, the Shire has approved an ex-gratia payment of $40,000 to the Pemberton Visitor Centre and Community Resource Centre to enhance the entrance and shared space they occupy.

With funding for the final stage now secured, the Shire of Manjimup and the Pemberton community can look ahead to the full realisation of a hub designed to serve as a lasting foundation for local collaboration, culture and connection.
