Information for Voters

Voting in local government elections, while not compulsory, is an important way for you to connect with grassroots government.

Shire of Manjimup elections are conducted via postal voting. Electors will receive an election package containing ballot paper(s), candidate profiles, a declaration envelope and pre-paid return envelope, approximately three weeks before the election. Optional preferential voting is used to determine the result of local government elections.

To vote, complete the ballot paper(s), place them in the declaration envelope, sign the envelope and place the signed declaration envelope in the pre-paid envelope. We encourage you to complete your package and return it via post in the reply-paid envelope. Alternatively, there will be a ballot box available at the Shire of Manjimup Administration Office Monday to Friday 8.15am to 4.30pm and on election day in the Manjimup Town Hall from 8am to 6pm.

For local government elections, the Shire uses two electoral rolls to determine who is eligible to vote - the Residents Roll and the Owners and Occupiers Roll.

Residents Roll

All residents in a local government district who are enrolled on the State Electoral Roll are automatically enrolled on the corresponding local government Residents Roll. Your details on the State Electoral Roll must be up to date at least six weeks prior to the election date.

If you have recently moved to the Shire, turned 18 years of age or become an Australian citizen you may need to check your enrolment status on the WA Electoral Commission website.

Owners and Occupiers Roll

If you own or occupy property within the Shire in a different ward to that which you live, you may be eligible to enrol on the Owners and Occupiers Roll. Body Corporates who own or occupy property, may nominate two people to vote on behalf of the company.

Enrolment on the Owners and Occupiers Rolls is made via the forms below. Completion of the form does not guarantee enrolment. The Shire will write to you within 14 days of receiving your completed form, confirming or denying your enrolment. You have the right of appeal to the Electoral Commissioner if the Shire denies your enrolment request.

Enrolment forms for Owners and Occupiers Roll

Enrolment by owners of property expires when the property is sold.

Enrolment by occupiers of property expires:

  • the day six months after the second ordinary election day since the claim was made (in some special cases, enrolment may expire six months after the third ordinary election), or
  • when the lease expires or ceases (whichever occurs first).

Enrolment on the Owners and Occupiers Roll also ceases in instances where the elector requests removal from the roll, the elector dies, the elector becomes a resident or, in the case of a Body Corporate, if the Body Corporate wishes to changes its nominees.
