Animals

Owning a pet is a meaningful, long-term commitment that requires careful thought and preparation. Before bringing an animal into your home, it’s important to consider the time, costs, training, exercise, and ongoing care they will need throughout their life. Pets rely on their owners for love, safety, proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and a secure environment. When pets are well cared for, properly registered, and appropriately managed, both you and your best friend can enjoy a happy and rewarding companionship for many years to come.

DOGS

Bringing a dog into your life is a joyful commitment that deserves thoughtful consideration - when approached responsibly, it leads to happiness for both you and your loyal companion. In WA, the Dog Act 1976 requires all dogs over 3 months to be microchipped, wear a collar with registration tags, and be registered with the local government. CATS

The Cat Act 2011 was introduced by the State Government with the aim of encouraging responsible pet ownership and reducing the number of unwanted cats across WA. Rangers are authorised to enforce this legislation and fines may apply to owners who do not comply.

SNAKES

If you see a snake, you should contact the Wildcare helpline (9474 9055) or their Local Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) in the first instance. Ranger Services have trained snake handlers and can also be contacted. For advice on encountering a snake in the wild, visit DPaW's website. ANIMAL WELFARE CONCERNS

All animals deserve the five freedoms: freedom from hunger and thirst, discomfort, pain or disease, fear or distress, and the ability to express normal behaviors, ensured through proper care, environment, and treatment.

If you witness cruelty to an animal, please visit the RSPCA website and make a report. Alternatively, if you believe the animal is in imminent danger, you can contact the RSPCA on 1300 278 3589.

To help sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife, please call the Wildcare helpline on 9474 9055. Visit the Department of Parks and Wildlife for more information.

BE SURE TO LET US KNOW

  • Should you move within the Shire of Manjimup, so that your dog's registration details can be updated.
  • If you move away from the Shire of Manjimup, and have transferred your dog's registration to the new City/Shire. Complete the change of address form and give a copy to the Shire of Manjimup and your new City/Shire.
  • If your dog is deceased or goes to a new owner.

You can let the Shire know by completing the animal maintenance form and returning it to the Shire.

UNWANTED PETS / ADOPTION OPTIONS

As all dogs and cats without owners are referred to re-homing agencies for assessment. Community members and pet owners should contact these agencies directly if they can no longer care for their pet. The contacts are detailed below:
