Pemberton Mill Site Remediation: Shire Encourages Community Engagement
Pemberton Mill Site Remediation: Shire Encourages Community Engagement by Parkside and State Government
The Shire of Manjimup recently met with representatives of the State Government (Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage), Thuroona Services (acting for Parkside) and Mainline Demolition to learn about Parkside’s planned remediation of the fire-affected Pemberton Mill site.
The Shire acknowledges the ongoing process for the remediation of the Pemberton Mill site and recognises the importance of clear communication with the local community.
While the remediation project is not led by the Shire, the Shire has strongly encouraged Parkside and the State Government to undertake comprehensive communication to ensure the local community has a clear understanding of the planned demolition and remediation works.
The Shire has consistently advocated for the complete remediation of the Pemberton Mill site since the fire event in December 2022, recognising its potential risk to public health. The Shire has also advocated the site’s strategic importance for the town's development and economic potential.
If undertaken, public communication and information workshops led by Parkside and the State Government would provide a valuable platform for local community members to ask questions and gain a clear picture of planned works. The Shire encourages Parkside and the State Government to reach out to the community directly, to ensure the local community is well informed about planned remediation works.
The Shire of Manjimup remains committed to supporting the sustainable development of Pemberton and looks forward to the positive outcomes that remediation of the mill site will bring.
Residents with questions or concerns can contact the demolition team via email at pembertonmill@thuroona.com.au.
Shire President Donelle Buegge stated, “the Shire of Manjimup remains committed to ensuring that the State Government and Parkside keep the Pemberton community well informed of planned demolition and remediation works.”
